Mercury is lingering in a guarded staredown with P Mercury is lingering in a guarded staredown with Pluto and, in my mind, I am picturing Hermes and Hades as two strangers staring at each other from across a vast, crowded room. In truth, Pluto’s territory is not entirely foreign and uncharted to Hermes. Mercury does cover a lot of ground in both astrology and mythology — including the path that leads to the Underworld. When Mercury and Pluto cross paths, the intellectual and psychological terrains we are guided to explore are eerie and captivating in equal measure. If the contact between these two planets takes place as a so-called tense, or stressful aspect, the experience feels more like what is usually referred to as appel du vide — the call of the void. The urge to jump headfirst into something alluring yet unfathomable, metaphorically speaking. The irrepressible impulse to dig our way to the bottom line-level truth. Curiosity becomes more than an itch — “voracious appetite” is a more accurate expression. Pluto deals with survival, and, with a Mercury/Pluto contact perfecting in the heavens, we might find ourselves obsessively searching for information as though our life depended on it. Which is not necessarily a bad thing per se. Lifting the lid of the Vase of Pandora where our disquietude and shadow material are stored can be a potent, cathartic, exorcising gesture, proven that we are not pushing ourselves or being forced to do so before we’re *actually* willing and able to reckon with what comes up. On the other hand, we all know what happens when that emotionally charged urge to pull a subject apart and fill the gaps in our knowledge is driven by the kind of ancestral terror that can only be triggered by a lack of explanation for the inexplicable. (Conspiracy theories, anyone?). Pluto has a way of sensing what lurks underneath the surface, beyond the facade, and magnify it until it cannot be ignored any longer. The thoughts marinating on the inside of our skull today are but the feeble echoes of all the unclaimed wants, needs and desires that lie dormant someplace deep within. A Full Moon in the sign of the Water Bearer rose t A Full Moon in the sign of the Water Bearer rose tonight (July 24 at 02:37 AM UTC here in Europe, July 23 at 10:37 PM ET in the US), the first of two Aquarius plenilunes in a row (the second one will occur on August 22). Like providential lanterns on the path of the Hermit, the two orbs of night, both co-present with their ruler Saturn, illuminate the twists and turns of the road we’ve been traveling ever since the ringed taskmaster entered Aquarius on March 22, 2020. The house that contains Aquarius in our chart is currently under construction, as we learn how to engage with the corresponding areas of our life in ways that are consistent, observant and dependable. Coming on the heels of a conjunction to Pluto in Capricorn, but otherwise fairly disembroiled from the current tangle of planetary confabulations (if we rule out sign-based aspects), this gentle, sapient Full Moon landing at 1 degree 26 minutes of Aquarius is an invitation to ponder and acknowledge how far we’ve come and all that we lived through. Luna carried our darkness for us while climbing towards fullness. Co-present and communing with Retrograde Saturn, she saw us scraping and clawing to get where we are. Too, with Aquarius being the sign that subsumes both our understanding of systems and the lived experience of those who dwell at the fringes, this Full Moon also spotlights the outcome of our efforts to find a sense of belonging among our people. At this point, what began as a grueling endeavor is likely morphing into a hefty structure we can lean on. A safe container, perhaps. Wearing our heart on our sleeve (the Sun in Leo sitting at the opposite end of the axis), rejecting what feels out of place in the world we want to live in, is a powerful recipe for calling in those who share the same vision. The community that holds us. The togetherness that keeps us together. There is one simple, yet cathartical and freeing r There is one simple, yet cathartical and freeing realization that completely changed the game for me: you don’t need to be all things to all people. Not as an individual, nor as an astrologer. To some, this might sound glaringly obvious. To me, conditioned to make myself small and blend in with my surroundings in order to shield myself from the ongoing emotional abuse I endured during childhood, it was a revelation. As a person, it’s not your job to make yourself palatable to just about everyone. Not only you’re worthy of being seen in your full authenticity — it’s also safe to *not* be liked, as bizarre as this might sound. Personally, as a recovering fawner, it feels liberating to acknowledge that I'm not here to please and serve everybody. While we enter the shimmering portal of Leo season and while I approach my Venus return in perceptive, judicious Virgo, I’m here to tell you: you’re not for everyone. And that’s ok. I’m not, either. I’m not here for the rampant fear mongering of the conspirituality crowd, the spiritual bypassing, the casual or deliberate cultural appropriation in predominantly white spiritual spaces, the erasure of systemic oppression. Poetry, to me, is not an escape route from reality. My work is poetic because I myself am attentive to nuances and paradox. I am a dreamer because I believe that altering something as tactile as the physical world we live in *has* to start with a vision. The New Moon arriving at 18 degrees Cancer —on either July 9 or 10 depending on your time zone, is full-bodied, impelling. It’s memory and presence. It’s *then* and *now*. It’s the story written in the annual growth circles adorning the cross section of a tree, and it’s also the eclosion of a butterfly crawling out of its chrysalis, only to discover that the experience of belonging is constantly being shaped and altered by our own becoming. It’s continuity and renewal. Outgrowing protection. Redefining safety. There is no way to un-feel a pain that punctures t There is no way to un-feel a pain that punctures the connective membrane between embodied Self and the ecosphere. Since yesterday, ecological grief has been ferociously ripping my entrails to shreds, the intensity escalating in sync with the buildup of the Cancer Sun / Aries Chiron square culminating today. Chiron unlocks doorways. Sometimes, the wound is the door. If it’s true that “grief is love that has no place to go”, then bearing witness to a world-scale ecocide in the age where information circulates with ruthless immediacy makes love a sharp thing that enters you and hollows you out. Right now I’m writing from that very cavernous place, and I find that words are hard to come by. Both love and grief run deep when you’re wide open. I’m finding comfort in the idea that, perhaps, something can be birthed through that channel unlocked — something that can circulate through the world with the same ruthlessness. It doesn’t have to be something that exceeds your current capacity or emotional bandwidth. It can be a prayer. Sowing a literal or metaphorical seed (the upcoming New Moon in Cancer will carry a trace of this piercing discomfort). Collecting trash on the beach or in the woods. Communing with the local plant and animal allies and ask them to guide you towards the steps that can be taken to heal and restore what is being ravaged. Most importantly, don’t overestimate the importance of being gentle with yourself and your zone of life as you work through despondency and transmute suffering. On the day Mars in Leo perfects its opposition to Saturn in Aquarius, triggering the ongoing Saturn/Uranus square, THE astrological signature of 2021. Mars in Leo is the heart saying go. Saturn is the force majeure curbing our instincts and demanding that we hold still. Mars serves the spark of our creative urge. Saturn is the ineluctability of the drawbacks we’re being called to contend with. It’s systemic. Reality-based. Factual. Saturn says not now, not like this. Not until you’re fully behind your goal, energetically. Not unless you are fully embodying your integrity. Not until you’re ready to accept the responsibility that comes with claiming your place. Uranus in Taurus infuses a burning sense of Urgency with capital U into this aggravating tug of war. An uproarious desire to reform what is no longer sustainable is taking over our minds and hearts. We might be wondering why hasn’t it happened already. Should we keep pushing through until exhaustion overcomes us? Should we just lay down our arms and call it a day? While my angle on astrology is primarily informed While my angle on astrology is primarily informed by the Hellenistic tradition, I’m also someone who is inclined to question things and seldom satisfied with taking them at face value. My Jupiter is exiled and locked away in the Twelfth House, home of the outsider looking in. Struggling with unconditional trust is both my superpower and my Achilles’ Heel. (Add a Mercury that is both Retrograde and combust, not to mention the dispositor of said Jupiter, and you get the idea). I value the credibility of sources, which was a huge motivation behind my decision to approach ancient texts after nearly a decade of study of contemporary authors, but the odds of me regurgitating truisms verbatim are virtually nonexistent. In my client work, I noticed that conversations sparked by ‘right questions’ tend to be more alive and generative than those steered by ‘right answers’. Now, I don’t really subscribe to the idea that the Nodes of the Moon represent a Soul watershed of sorts — the North Node encapsulating ‘habits’ and ‘patterns’ that we’re meant to ‘leave behind’, and the North Node pointing to the ‘lessons we are meant to learn’. I also don’t necessarily disagree with this angle. Simply put, I would rather go deeper and look for nuance, depth and breadth. I observe. I ponder. I dissect. I peel back layers. (One might argue that this is very Virgo South Node of me). I do, sometimes, wish that faith felt more like second nature to me as opposed to something to strive for until my last breath. Which is, I guess, why I primarily consider myself a seeker who is here to help fellow seekers find their bearings. But that’s another story, for another time. I felt like writing about the Nodes of the Moon, because, today, I experienced mine in the most exquisitely empirical fashion. I was laying down on my couch, deep in a timeline-jumping meditation / guided self-hypnosis where I got to meet and merge with a future self. As the tension between Venus in Cancer and Retrogr As the tension between Venus in Cancer and Retrograde Pluto in Capricorn builds, leading up to tomorrow’s opposition, I wholeheartedly feel like thanking love for the little deaths, the big scary deaths, the Ego deaths. For every time love handed me my ass and baited me out of the shambles of a former version of myself that I couldn’t seem to let go of. For every time love has set me on a merciful path of sacred self-destruction and redemption. For every layer shed. For every fear conquered. For every limit pushed. Pluto and Venus merely form a mild sextile in my natal chart, but much like with Plutonium, the element named after the “evolve-or-perish” planet of metamorphosis, a small amount is enough to turn into critical mass. When paired with Venus, Pluto teaches us how to alchemize love and desire into self-renewal. There’s both brutality and bliss to that. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s more than tough love. It’s the kind of primal drive, of Eros, that births entire Universes and collapses them. Love is the very reason why I’m here, myself. Collapsing timelines. Slaying the dragons of self-doubt. Pushing through. (Right now, *that*’s my edge.) Passion doesn’t nearly get enough credit for the way it moves us as it moves through us while we move through the world, burning down all that stands in its way. Burning away the debris. Burning. Venus-Pluto is the sheer hunger that rips you to pieces and rearranges you. If you’re brave enough to witness the many funerals of who you used to be, that is. To divine is to see. To divine is to hear. Divinat To divine is to see. To divine is to hear. Divination is more than a practice. It’s a two-way conversation with the sentient being-ness that surrounds us. It’s an innate gifts that, in order to blossom, requires a conscious state of relatedness between human and more-than-human. A healthy relationship is one where the lines of communication are open. In a healthy relationship, we honor one another’s truth before we bury it in assumptions. Radical vulnerability entails radical courage; neither are possible in the absence of trust. Trust, especially as Mercury stations direct in the sign of Gemini (the fluid, shapeshifting deity of all things liminal, logical and elucidative began recoiling into the Underworld of subtext and secrecy on May 29), looks like reaching out to grasp the information that is floating to the surface. Trust means accepting that all the divination tools in the world cannot make up for our reluctance to embrace our inner knowing or acknowledge the Universe’s bids for connection. Trust means knowing that the validation we so desperately seek adds to the noise that we strive to block out in an attempt to get closer to the truth. Divination becomes second nature as soon as we ease into trust. As Mercury slowly pivots sliding into their post-Retrograde shadow, may you choose not to ghost your intuition. The Summer Solstice ushering in Cancer season whil The Summer Solstice ushering in Cancer season while Jupiter slows to a halt at 2 degrees Pisces makes me think of the moments preceding an unhurried descent — breathing in the aliveness of the longest day of the year, before gliding downwards into the aphotic depths amidst muffled sounds, floating matter and briny, liquid comfort. Summer Solstice is when the Sun is witnessed and honored in its full glory and luminescence. A god who has defeated death and came back unscathed. Still, much like the muted caliginosity of the Winter Solstice invites us to anticipate the promise of resurrection, I find that, especially this year, with Jupiter gearing up to abandon the all-embracing waters of Pisces to re-enter Aquarius (on July 29), the most radiant light always implies the existence of dark, misdoubted corners. In this astrological landscape, loose ends are tethers pulling us towards the depths, where the process of integration of the sapience Jupiter has bestowed upon us can truly begin. The Sun at the heights of its luminescence, dipping into the waters of Cancer, while Jupiter prepares to revisit Saturn’s territory, reminds me that both our past and our inner darkness are places where we can go on purpose whenever we intend to shift our trajectory and reckon with the hidden narratives that sabotage our expansion. Jupiter will station direct on October 18, 2021. Mercury is lingering in a guarded staredown with P Mercury is lingering in a guarded staredown with Pluto and, in my mind, I am picturing Hermes and Hades as two strangers staring at each other from across a vast, crowded room. In truth, Pluto’s territory is not entirely foreign and uncharted to Hermes. Mercury does cover a lot of ground in both astrology and mythology — including the path that leads to the Underworld. When Mercury and Pluto cross paths, the intellectual and psychological terrains we are guided to explore are eerie and captivating in equal measure. If the contact between these two planets takes place as a so-called tense, or stressful aspect, the experience feels more like what is usually referred to as appel du vide — the call of the void. The urge to jump headfirst into something alluring yet unfathomable, metaphorically speaking. The irrepressible impulse to dig our way to the bottom line-level truth. Curiosity becomes more than an itch — “voracious appetite” is a more accurate expression. Pluto deals with survival, and, with a Mercury/Pluto contact perfecting in the heavens, we might find ourselves obsessively searching for information as though our life depended on it. Which is not necessarily a bad thing per se. Lifting the lid of the Vase of Pandora where our disquietude and shadow material are stored can be a potent, cathartic, exorcising gesture, proven that we are not pushing ourselves or being forced to do so before we’re *actually* willing and able to reckon with what comes up. On the other hand, we all know what happens when that emotionally charged urge to pull a subject apart and fill the gaps in our knowledge is driven by the kind of ancestral terror that can only be triggered by a lack of explanation for the inexplicable. (Conspiracy theories, anyone?). Pluto has a way of sensing what lurks underneath the surface, beyond the facade, and magnify it until it cannot be ignored any longer. The thoughts marinating on the inside of our skull today are but the feeble echoes of all the unclaimed wants, needs and desires that lie dormant someplace deep within. A Full Moon in the sign of the Water Bearer rose t A Full Moon in the sign of the Water Bearer rose tonight (July 24 at 02:37 AM UTC here in Europe, July 23 at 10:37 PM ET in the US), the first of two Aquarius plenilunes in a row (the second one will occur on August 22). Like providential lanterns on the path of the Hermit, the two orbs of night, both co-present with their ruler Saturn, illuminate the twists and turns of the road we’ve been traveling ever since the ringed taskmaster entered Aquarius on March 22, 2020. The house that contains Aquarius in our chart is currently under construction, as we learn how to engage with the corresponding areas of our life in ways that are consistent, observant and dependable. Coming on the heels of a conjunction to Pluto in Capricorn, but otherwise fairly disembroiled from the current tangle of planetary confabulations (if we rule out sign-based aspects), this gentle, sapient Full Moon landing at 1 degree 26 minutes of Aquarius is an invitation to ponder and acknowledge how far we’ve come and all that we lived through. Luna carried our darkness for us while climbing towards fullness. Co-present and communing with Retrograde Saturn, she saw us scraping and clawing to get where we are. Too, with Aquarius being the sign that subsumes both our understanding of systems and the lived experience of those who dwell at the fringes, this Full Moon also spotlights the outcome of our efforts to find a sense of belonging among our people. At this point, what began as a grueling endeavor is likely morphing into a hefty structure we can lean on. A safe container, perhaps. Wearing our heart on our sleeve (the Sun in Leo sitting at the opposite end of the axis), rejecting what feels out of place in the world we want to live in, is a powerful recipe for calling in those who share the same vision. There is one simple, yet cathartical and freeing r There is one simple, yet cathartical and freeing realization that completely changed the game for me: you don’t need to be all things to all people. Not as an individual, nor as an astrologer. To some, this might sound glaringly obvious. To me, conditioned to make myself small and blend in with my surroundings in order to shield myself from the ongoing emotional abuse I endured during childhood, it was a revelation. As a person, it’s not your job to make yourself palatable to just about everyone. Not only you’re worthy of being seen in your full authenticity — it’s also safe to *not* be liked, as bizarre as this might sound. Personally, as a recovering fawner, it feels liberating to acknowledge that I'm not here to please and serve everybody. While we enter the shimmering portal of Leo season and while I approach my Venus return in perceptive, judicious Virgo, I’m here to tell you: you’re not for everyone. And that’s ok. I’m not, either. I’m not here for the rampant fear mongering of the conspirituality crowd, the spiritual bypassing, the casual or deliberate cultural appropriation in predominantly white spiritual spaces, the erasure of systemic oppression. Poetry, to me, is not an escape route from reality. My work is poetic because I myself am attentive to nuances and paradox. I am a dreamer because I believe that altering something as tactile as the physical world we live in *has* to start with a vision. The New Moon arriving at 18 degrees Cancer —on either July 9 or 10 depending on your time zone, is full-bodied, impelling. It’s memory and presence. It’s *then* and *now*. It’s the story written in the annual growth circles adorning the cross section of a tree, and it’s also the eclosion of a butterfly crawling out of its chrysalis, only to discover that the experience of belonging is constantly being shaped and altered by our own becoming. It’s continuity and renewal. Outgrowing protection. Redefining safety. Sovereign in Her own sign, Luna is aided by Uranus, God of disruption, and Neptune, the deity that lords over the tides of inspiration. Change and surrender midwife this new chapter into being. There is no way to un-feel a pain that punctures t There is no way to un-feel a pain that punctures the connective membrane between embodied Self and the ecosphere. Since yesterday, ecological grief has been ferociously ripping my entrails to shreds, the intensity escalating in sync with the buildup of the Cancer Sun / Aries Chiron square culminating today. Chiron unlocks doorways. Sometimes, the wound is the door. If it’s true that “grief is love that has no place to go”, then bearing witness to a world-scale ecocide in the age where information circulates with ruthless immediacy makes love a sharp thing that enters you and hollows you out. Right now I’m writing from that very cavernous place, and I find that words are hard to come by. Both love and grief run deep when you’re wide open. I’m finding comfort in the idea that, perhaps, something can be birthed through that channel unlocked — something that can circulate through the world with the same ruthlessness. It doesn’t have to be something that exceeds your current capacity or emotional bandwidth. It can be a prayer. Sowing a literal or metaphorical seed (the upcoming New Moon in Cancer will carry a trace of this piercing discomfort). Collecting trash on the beach or in the woods. Communing with the local plant and animal allies and ask them to guide you towards the steps that can be taken to heal and restore what is being ravaged. Most importantly, don’t overestimate the importance of being gentle with yourself and your zone of life as you work through despondency and transmute suffering.
