2020 will probably go down in history as the year world lost its façade, revealing the bare, rotten bones underneath. The year we collectively realized that normal is but code for the mass hypnosis of our apathy — for those to which this applies, since many didn’t have the luxury to ignore the unceasing stench of things falling apart.
Compassion that isn’t unabashedly radical is hardly even an option anymore. Nor is performative empathy. Or spiritual work that isn’t aware of and steeped in social justice. Or the toxic positivity culture that bypasses the uncomfortable shadow work of dismantling systemic inequality. It’s like the hall of mirror of our collective — as well as individual — delusions is coming to a dead end.
It’s a crisis in the proper sense of the word — the ancient Greek word κρίσις, krísis, used to mean “a separating, power of distinguishing, decision, choice, judgment” [source]. Like every crisis, this historical moment requires nothing short of a major, revolutionary re-alignment from within, for each and everyone of us. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that, in addition to the recurring retrogrades of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, this year also brings us the stations of Venus and Mars.
The final destination of this journey is unclear, but without firmly holding the vision of a different world, without being willing and able to expand our heart center, without accepting to part with the illusions that hold us back — that we are powerless, that capitalism and white supremacy are so embedded in the fabric of our society that they can’t be dismantled, that words are just words or that our individual contribution hardly matters or any other nebulous belief that keeps us in a state of disconnected quiescence — we can hardly hope to move on from where we’re starting.
Delusions, compassion, inspiration, idealism and imagination, as well as passivity and avoidance, are quintessential Neptunian themes. On June 23, 2020, Neptune stations Retrograde at 20°57’ Pisces. The tide goes out, uncovering the shells and shipwrecks that were barely blurs in the distant turbidity underwater — inner structures, quests or ideals that are either meant to be unmade, to undergo dissolution, or, vice versa, to be re-oriented, brought into focus, pulled from the capricious streams onto the mainland.
Neptune demands sacrifice. Release. Especially in the case when Neptune is hitting a sensitive spot in the chart, the lifting of the veil can be blissfully heartbreaking. The blissful intoxication of mirages, too all-consuming to be abandoned. But the tide will flow in yet again, with unknown potential, new hopes, dreams that don’t lead us astray, and a refreshed sense of faith.
Neptune will station direct on November 29, 2020 at 18°10′ Pisces.
