Vaporous, unworldly Neptune in Pisces is now squar Vaporous, unworldly Neptune in Pisces is now squaring the Nodes of the Moon. To be precise, this aspect has been within orb of effect roughly since late November 2020, but is currently peaking, and will be exact until January 28. Neptune squaring the Nodal Axis makes me think of a cosmic tuning fork of sorts. It’s a subtle invitation to fine-tune our compass… but in hard mode. A compass is still prone to deviation errors when subjected to magnetic interference, and Neptune can inspire and elevate as much as it warps and misshapes. Especially in the presence of great unknowns and unsolvable riddles. Especially within a coercive economic system that fabricate the illusion of scarcity and volatility, intensifying our mind’s exigency to fill in the blanks. A cloud-to-ground lightning bolt, racing downward from the heavens. The brisk winds of utopia sweeping the far-flung corners of the world. January 30 is when the ingenious, ductile, nonbinary herald of the Gods will slow to a halt in the dominion of the Water Bearer, where they answer to the stern authority of Saturn. This year, all three Retrograde cycles of Mercury will happen in Air signs, encouraging reflexive reframings, instigating meta-perspectives and spurring us on to reconsider our ideas, where they stem from and how we articulate them. While the Retrograde period itself is usually the part of the cycle that is most emphasized, the pre-Retrograde shadow is no less important — if nothing else, it defies what we think we know about the nature of time, which is no small feat. The sky is a tangle of opposing forces today, Janu The sky is a tangle of opposing forces today, January 14. It feels like pressure ridges and tensile cracks on an ice sheet. It feels like friction between neighbouring particles. Like the readiness, and the urgency, to allow the load to break through and break us open. Uranus stationed direct at 6°43 Taurus, the epicentre of a whirlwind of planetary tensions; not only is the Great Awakener completing the Retrograde cycle started in August, 2020: the planet of unrest and insubordination is also involved in a heedless square with growth-oriented Jupiter, and Mars in Taurus is arm wrestling with Saturn while inching closer to Uranus itself. Overall, this looks and feels like one of those major, unsolvable problems in physics. A cosmological paradox. A spacetime singularity. Uranus’ direct station is (or, rather, would be) a trigger for the release of built-up tension, a radical call to stop contemplating the revolution and start anchoring it in the world. It wants to abruptly unlock all of the ‘next steps’ we have been putting on hold, and to leave the past in the rearview mirror. Saturn’s agenda, however, couldn’t be more different; it’s worth noting that the Saturn/Uranus square is one of the astrological signatures of 2021 (I’ll write a detailed post about it soon). New ways of approaching old habits and quandaries do not magically erase consequences and after-effects. Not with outdated structures still in place. We’re seeing this in the world at large, and quite possibly in our lives, too. The tension between the two cosmic heavyweights will peak thrice throughout the course of the year; what we’re seeing and experiencing now is a prelude to this overarching theme. Past and future, rigour and disruption, consequence and restoration, answerability and rejection, gridlocked and entwined. A New Moon lands at 23 degrees 13 minutes of Ca A New Moon lands at 23 degrees 13 minutes of Capricorn on January 13 (5 AM UTC; late in the evening on January 12 if you're in the US), dark velvet-sultry, augural, ringed by a Plutonian aura of nuclear power. The planet of death, rebirth and survival sits one degree away from the two luminaries, with the New Moon itself occurring in very close proximity to the exact spot (22°46) where the infamous Saturn/Pluto conjunction took place one year ago, in January 2020. The metamorphic demands of this New Moon are peremptory. Like every New Moon, this, too, marks the beginning of a cycle. Pluto says not so fast, however. Not before we clear the field of the rubble and reminders of what life was before we named the fears we never thought we would know so viscerally and that linger, perhaps, like meteoroids in our orbit. This New Moon is laborious and exacting; Saturn and Pluto, one propelling us towards the heights and the latter luring us down into the depths, are passing the torch of sacred destruction to us so we can burn away the debris. With a caveat — the slow and steady nature of Saturn, cosmic architect, is not one that yields instant results. I want to talk about planets in exile as sacred re I want to talk about planets in exile as sacred rebels, and I want to talk about this because Mars is a handful hours away from entering Taurus, the sign of its exile, the Venusian alcove of earthly delights, which means that our blazing knight will cross the path of Uranus the iconoclast (currently transiting the same sign), and clash against the incoming assembly of Aquarius planets (including, but not limited to, Jupiter and Saturn). I want to talk about how planets in exile imply that there’s a place in the Universe for people who do not align with the status quo, people who have been excluded, othered, people who are not even remotely close to what is deemed the default. I want to talk about this in relation to Mars in Taurus, specifically, of pleasure as a revolution, of plodding along at our own pace towards the life we yearn for in a world that turned workism into a religion, sanctified cutthroat competitiveness, glorified burnout and expects us to martyrize ourselves for the sake of upward mobility. I want to talk about Mars in Taurus because Mars has been tearing along through Aries since June 2020, coming to a screeching halt in September 2020, and then stationing direct in November. But also, and mainly, because life isn’t magically going to pick up speed, and this is something we’ll have to deal with. One thing about Mars in Taurus, though — we will be encouraged to consider, and perhaps unlearn, the conflicting messages we have internalized about productivity, efficiency and consistency. And to entertain more heretical sentiments such as pleasure as a valid driving force and motivating factor, comfort as something that can set the pace of our modus operandi, consistency as something we can redefine on our own terms. Jupiter in Aquarius squaring Uranus in Taurus unti Jupiter in Aquarius squaring Uranus in Taurus until January 19 has our Souls aching for liberation. A cloud-to-ground lightning bolt, racing downward from the heavens. The brisk winds of utopia sweeping the far-flung corners of the world. There is some kind of intangible force propelling us into the future timelines we so vividly and ardently envisioned; it binds us together like a gravitational field. It feeds on the the emotional and intellectual ferment of this very moment. There are several ways in which this energy can manifest — impatience with slow progress, feeling the urge to overhaul and rewrite our beliefs, reacting against external or self-imposed restrictions. Most of all, I’d love us to focus on hope itself as a revolution. Hope, intentional, deliberate hope is beautiful. Hope is radical because it shatters the illusion that the past is a guarantee for the future. Hope is where cycles begin to break. January 30 is when the ingenious, ductile, nonbinary herald of the Gods will slow to a halt in the dominion of the Water Bearer, where they answer to the stern authority of Saturn. This year, all three Retrograde cycles of Mercury will happen in Air signs, encouraging reflexive reframings, instigating meta-perspectives and spurring us on to reconsider our ideas, where they stem from and how we articulate them. While the Retrograde period itself is usually the part of the cycle that is most emphasized, the pre-Retrograde shadow is no less important — if nothing else, it defies what we think we know about the nature of time, which is no small feat. The story arc that will emerge between this moment and January 30 is going to be rewritten, once, twice. The next two weeks are a humbling, yet riveting study in relativism and plasticity.
